Books To Cooks: “I Love Crab Cakes”

by admin 07.21.2008

When Mark Holmes pulled his recommendation off the shelf, he experienced a nostalgic journey back to his days as a waiter at Barbara-Jo’s Elegant Home Cooking. The old restaurant’s specialty, crab cakes, are done to perfection in Tom Douglas’ latest book, I Love Crab Cakes! Like the bite-sized oceanic delicacies, Tom’s new book packs a [...]

Barbara-Jo cannot get over Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Duguid’s latest book, Beyond the Great Wall: Recipes and Travels in the Other China ($45).
This is the fifth book in the couple’s series of award-winning titles that include Flatbreads & Flavors, Seductions of Rice, Hot Sour Salty Sweet, and Mangoes & Curry Leaves. This gloriously aesthetic cookbook [...]

Island Bound Again

by admin 07.01.2008

We’re taking off for the island this morning. Gone for the next week. I’m taking my laptop and my camera so I’ll be posting plenty.
While I’m gone, I’d like to ask a couple questions of the many restaurateurs who read this site. I hope some of them will be so kind as to answer these [...]

Moderne Burger Coming This Friday!

by admin 06.23.2008

Some fresh pics and good news from the Moderne Burger front. Vancouver’s best burgers are just five days away. Huzzah!
From founder/owner Peter Kokinis:
“bearing an act of god or war [...] we will be open [this] Friday.”
Why the long delay?
We’ve had equipment delays and problems which one would expect when building something like this from scratch, [...]

Van Mag Awards Poll

by admin 04.18.2008

I’ve heard plenty of griping about some of the results from Monday’s VM awards (full results here). It’s like an annual tradition. This weekend’s poll is based on the following specific complaints that have so far come my way:
“Pied-a-Terre is Euro-Disney”
“Tojo’s is wicked overrated.”
“Bearfoot Bistro should have beaten Araxi.”
“Boneta is quaint and all, but wtf?” [...]

The New York Times Loves Vancouver

by admin 03.27.2008

The New York Times’ fancypants “T” Magazine goes info-lite gaga for Vancouver in their current issue (thanks to reader SH for the heads-up). Take a look:

Farm To Table Restaurants | Bishop’s, Raincity, Aurora Bistro, Chow
Gastown A Go Go | Cobre and Boneta
Izakaya Eating | Guu and Hapa Izakaya
Pretty stuff, and great for Vancouver. There are [...]

“We Have The Pig”

by admin 02.28.2008

A cryptic note in this afternoon’s mailbag:
We have your pig. The ransom: good cheese. Two wheels of good cheese. Do not contact the authorities or the pig gets it. Do not contact Urban Diner or the pig gets it. Come alone. Drop point is #1 West Cordova (NOT Boneta.) You have until midnight Saturday.
I’m pretty [...]

Some Trouble With PR

by admin 02.28.2008

Gawd. I hate deleting my own posts but I just did. Sigh. Let me rephrase what I had written as a question to simplify and erase the sturm and drang context so some of the more fragrant knickers here can become unknotted…

Do you think PR representatives should post under their own names/signatures?
PS. The Ali reference [...]

West To Unveil New Executive Chef

by admin 12.18.2007

The following dispatch comes courtesy of Jamie Maw, recently returned from Hawaii and appearing this morning on Fanny Kiefer’s Studio 4 show:
Following a lengthy search, not a little anticipation, and the usual immigration clearances, comes the news that Warren Geraghty, the former executive chef of London’s Michelin-starred L’Escargot, will take up the burners at [...]
