Valentine’s Day menus and the Dine Around Comox Valley promotion dominate the news. The 4th Annual Comox Valley Dine Around runs Feb 20 – Mar 17 and at time of writing includes 22 venues and 3 hotels (follow the Twitter chatter via #DineAroundCV). The #DineAroundCV focus is on 3-course, prix fixe meals (at $17, $27 or $37 per person).

Several flagship “local food” venues in the region are featuring both Valentines and #DineAroundCV promotions. Locals in Courtenay [250-338-6493, 364-8th Street + FB] is on for both, but the “really big” buzz is that Locals is moving into the landmark Old House location on the Courtenay River. ETA is early May.

Union Street Grill and Grotto [250-897-0081, 477-5th Street, Courtenay  +FB @UnionStreetGril] will have $17 and $34 menues for #DineAroundCV.  For Valentines they’ll host another of the popular Candlelight Dinners with candles burning on Feb 14th, and the Valentines’ Special Menu available through to the 16th. Atlas Cafe [250-6th Street, Courtenay 250-338-9838  +FB] will be featuring a rotating 3-course $27 menu for #DineAroundCV. Chef Jon’s work with Blayne Prowse on the Edible Valley Podcasts is currently on hold as the team builds its own studio. Watch for the “conversation about local food” to start again this spring.

In Comox, Avenue Bistro [2064 Comox Ave 250-890-9200 +FB will have 3 courses for $37 for #DineAroundCV. Also on tap in Feb is another of Chef Aaron Rail’s One Big Table events, this time a “Brewmaster’s Dinner” with Sean Hoyne of Hoyne Brewery [ +FB @HoyneBrewery]. February will also see Atlas/Avenue Sommelier Connie Earl talking about Avenue B’s wine in our upcoming “wine column.”

Out of the #DineAroundCV range, Parksville’s Tigh-Na-Mara [250-248-1838, 1155 Resort Dr, Parksville @GrottoSpa] and Beach Club Resort [1-888-760-2008 181 Beachside Drive, Parksville  @BeachClubResort] host the 5th Annual Parksville Uncorked Wine and Culinary Festival. Lots of activities from Feb 21-24.

In Campbell River, Angler’s Dining Room [at Dolphins Resort, 1-800-891-0287, 4125 Discovery Drive  +FB @DolphinsResort] exchanges its monthly wine/beer-pairing dinner for a special menu on Valentine’s Day. The popular Angler’s 3-course for $30 menu on Wed-Thurs continues through February, moving to Mon-Tues in March. Wine pairing dinners are scheduled for the last weekends in March-May.

Asian foods update
The Comox Valley is generally not known for its non-Euro food scene. This past month, however, I’ve received good reports on a number of old and new venues. #1 Hana Korean Restaurant [250-334-0868, 168 5th St, Courtenay] boasts a new space on the corner of 5th and Cliffe in downtown Courtenay that is “just like the food: fresh and bright!” Raves for the house made kimchi. Ahra Japanese Restaurant [727G Anderton Rd, Comox 250-941-8886 +FB] specializing in Japanese and Korean fare. It’s tucked behind a generic Canadian coffee store in a little strip mall on Guthrie in Comox and has developed a loyal following since opening 2 years ago. Bamboo Garden [1130 Cliffe Ave, Courtenay 250-871-8808] has stepped outside the generic Chinese-Canadian box and is serving Vietnamese food, including pho. Manvirros Indian Grill [1-450 Ryan Rd, Courtenay 250-898-8858] has garnered fast praise (they’re in the old Stavros location at the foot of Ryan hill). At the top of the hill in the new commercial wasteland at Lerwich and Ryan, Domo Japan’s Japanese cooks are delivering service and delish food [444 Lerwick Rd 250-334-3616].
