Matt “Magic” Majid (currently behind the wood at Hyde) is a bit of a bartending Macgyver; Matt’s the type of guy who walks into a gas station while on a road trip, and walks out with a hodgepodge of items that once everyone gets back to the hotel, he transforms into syrups and tinctures which he then utilizes to craft some of the best damn cocktails you’ve ever tasted.
The other night I decided to attempt to make a cocktail at home, no small task as I don’t have a home bar as I very rarely, if ever, drink at home. I looked around my house for a bit then asked myself “What would Matt do?” I decided to make a cocktail with ingredients that almost everyone would have at their disposal this winter season. I grabbed a lemon, a mandarin orange, some sugar, an egg, a bag of lemon ginger tea, some Angostura bitters and an unopened bottle of Wild Turkey 81, The result was a Lemon/Ginger/Mandarin Bourbon Sour which I have dubbed the “Mccallister Sour” after Kevin Mccallister, the kid who get left behind at Christmas in “Home Alone”.
Inspiration can hit you at any moment, and sometimes you have to make due with what you have. Matt Majid has made this common obstacle his forte, and it has made him an elite barman, and an inspiration for those of us who find ourselves in need of a cocktail and short on ingredients when we’re home alone.
