The wait is almost over! The 2nd Annual Vancouver Craft Beer Week officially starts today at 4:30 pm at the Granville Island Brewery where Mayor Gregor Robertson will once again make his official declaration, wield the ceremonial mallet, and tap the first cask of the 2011 VCBW Collaboration Ale.
The 2011 VCBW Mallet a.k.a. “The Hammer” was designed again by local wood artist, Matthieu Leblanc; the original 2010 mallet/tap handle, also designed by Matthieu, can be still be seen holding court over the taps at the Alibi Room.

“This year I felt Vancouver Craft Beer Week was coming more into its own, and I wanted to showcase a mallet that represented where we come from,” Matt explains. “It was crafted from Vancouver Island Douglas Fir, salvaged from the stump of a harvested tree. The handle is made from Vancouver Japanese Maple, salvaged from an arborist’s trimmings not far from the intersection of Granville and Broadway.”
Once the hammer falls, it’s game on. Vancouver’s biggest craft beer party has arrived!
Tickets are still available, visit vancouvercraftbeerweek.com to view the extended week’s complete schedule of events (May 6-14) and to purchase tickets.
