In mid-November, AIS Wine Imports will unveil sixteen exclusively selected value-driven wines from the Spanish region of Castilla-La Mancha through a series of public tastings in 38 wine stores around the province. Finally, European pricing comes to North America, as these in-store releases will feature a distinctive new line of vibrant Spanish reds and whites all for under $20 a bottle.
Representing more than 50% of Spain’s wine country and boasting the most vineyards per region in the world, Castilla-La Mancha has developed a serious reputation for producing wines of exceptional value.
The entire flight was featured at Gastown’s Boneta last night, where authentic Spanish tapas, cheeses and charcuterie highlighted the launch of these bottled gems.
Showcasing wines for nearly every occasion, showstoppers included the tapa-friendly 2007 Finca La Estacada, Crianza, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla ($15.99), with its bright ruby red colouring, blackberry and dried rosemary nose, with black cherries and gentle oak on the palate. This easy-drinking 100% Tempranillo could even be served chilled. Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Cabernet Franc are blended together to create the 2008 Finca Los Aljibes, VA Tinto, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla ($14.99), a crowd favourite with its brilliant ruby colour, dried herb, eucalyptus and earthy nose, featuring a big splash of juicy red fruits, berry jam and cocoa.
Looking to become the hit of the dinner party circuit? Pick up the Tempranillo, Merlot and Syrah blend, 2008 Bodega López Mercier, Cal Y Canto Full Red, Vino de la Tierra Castilla ($11.99) and watch those invites roll in. The bright cherries and spice on the nose leads the way to a fruit-forward and balanced, earthy, berry and tobacco palate with a spicy length on the finish. Quite quaffable and the perfect companion to pâtés, meats and cheeses.
Buying by the case? The 2009 Vitivinos Anunciación, Azua, Bobal Roble, Manchuela DO at $13.99 fits the bill. Dark purple in colour, with wild currants and liquorice on the nose, the dry palate offers sweet prune and plum infused tannins with slight hints of oak.
