In both American and Belgian brewing traditions, there is a history of stronger spiced ales that are normally associated with Christmas. Before malt was available in America, pumpkin was one substitute ingredient that was used to make ale. However, spiced pumpkin ale is a more recent phenomenon in craft brewing that is becoming increasingly established as a fall seasonal, released in the run-up to Hallowe’en.
Howe Sound’s Pumpkineater Imperial Pumpkin Ale is made with roasted pumpkin, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and star anise. With pumpkin spice featuring prominently in this beer’s flavour profile, it will appeal to those who like their pumpkin desserts or pumpkin spice lattes more so than people who prefer their squash in a curry, pasta, or soup.
At 19 IBUs, Pumpkineater has no discernible bitterness or hop character. It’s a medium-bodied, lightly-carbonated copper ale that starts off malty and sweet, giving way to spice, then finishing somewhat dry with the star anise becoming readily distinguishable. A warming alcohol sensation emerges, but the ale isn’t boozy like some old ales or barely wines can be.
Pumpkineater will enhance the flavour of any spiced pumpkin dessert; contrast nicely with a traditional turkey dinner that includes all the trimmings; and pair well with mild, fresh cheeses. At 8% ABV, the 1 litre serving means most people won’t drink an entire bottle by themselves. Rather, it’s best suited for two or more.
