Now I Am Mad

by Keith Talent on September 22, 2009

The first step to finding a cure is admitting you have a problem; I admit it, I take food way more seriously than any otherwise sane balanced individual should. This New York Times A/V essay on the cities best pizza makes me angry, very angry. The injustice of the pizza balance sets me quivering with irritation. Why can the people of New York be so awash in riches and we’re left debating the merits of Panago. It’s not fair. If I had a slightly more balanced view perhaps I could look at the pictures without drooling, I can’t. The thing that really bugs me is these are local neighbourhood joints, the kind of place you’d get a pizza from on your way home before Monday Night Football. They’re not destinations you’d tromp halfway across town for, then again I would if we had anything like these places. Infuriating.

Small steps; how about we start at banning pineapple as a topping. Try ordering it in NYC, SF, Boston, or Chicago….

I would support a Napoletana movement; fresh, one pie at a time.

Sounds to me like a “somebody should open up a…”
Great, if you consider yourself a somebody, get going on it.

Spend two weeks in New York,Boston and Chicago researching what they do so well, come home and emulate it. Why are you waiting for someone else to do it?
Make your hometown proud, and add your name to the Vancouver culinary history books.

I agree that we certainly lack easy access to the great kinds of pizza places presented in the NYT piece, but there are a few decent enough places in Vancouver – but you have to know where to look.
I wouldn’t tromp halfway across town for Ollie’s (at the entrance to Granville Island) or Zachary’s (on Oak/16th) or Ragazzi (E. 22nd), but they are good places to grab a decent slice.
There’s even better pizza to be had as well, but I’m not willing to share that top secret info just yet.
While on the subject, I’d like to pour one out for the long departing but still missed Pizzarico’s, which began as a tiny hole in the wall on Robson, just east of Thurlow (back when Robson was still a little non-generic), then moved to a bigger location further West on Robson, and then into the Bentall food court where it did ok with its regular crowd until the third owner sold it to a couple that wasn’t able to keep the quality up to its usual standards (they brought in heat lamps) and the place quickly folded.

Yes Banning Pineapple is a good idea.

What the what?
Does anyone NOT think those NYTimes pizzas looked awesome? So what up?
I get that you are passionate about food.
i get the part about being angry.
But that foaming-at-the-mouth tirade obscures your actual point.
What exactly is the “pizza balance?” . The article didnt say. Do you want more pizza or less pizza? less expensive pizzas? More panagos? What?

Maybe your just hungry….
Eat something. Take a nap

Rumour has it that Incendio reopens in a month or so. Chefs have been down to washington testing their new pizza oven. Can’t wait to get my teeth into a well balanced Volcana

PizzaRicos just the name makes me long for the old days on Robson when I first moved to Van in the fall of 85 many days the Riccospecial was the meal of the day. Damn shame it shuttered after all the great slices Rico and Ross shared with us.

Best place for pizza in the Lower Mainland is Steveston Pizza. http://stevestonpizza.com/

Seriously, even if I didn’t live close by, I’d still make the trek to RIchmond to get it. It’s that good and made with love by Chef Nader.
