Chef’s Last Supper

last_supperAs you walked in through the front doors, the hostess would greet you, find your reservation, and in the background you couldn’t help but notice the bar in full swing, making the finest classic and contemporary cocktails. The sound of the espresso grinder, great music, and of course, a faint sound of the infamous cowbell dinging from the basement kitchen. Food runners pop up from the back stairs, with plates of gorgeous food, artistically presented, and the flavour was off the charts. This was Chow. One of the tastiest secrets on South Granville. Sadly, with bouts of heartache, Chow closed its doors in May 2009, and in the last 4 months, everyone had seemed to move on. For Chef/Owner Jean-Christophe Poirier (JC) in particular, this was a tough loss – although he had much support from his girlfriend, the community, and his many peers, losing your restaurant, something you’re so passionate about, is just as hard to get over as a hideous break-up. Redundant Redundancy Department

It’s reported that Gordon Ramsay is set to become a cartoon. Or perhaps more cartoonish would be  accurate. I wonder what the category that comes after “over exposed like the surface of the sun” is called? I guess we’ll find out, but I’d be willing to bet the concept of hypocrite figures pretty strongly.

“Gordon Ramsay, at Your Service” is described as a half-hour laffer that will take “the essence of who he is and have a bit of fun with it,” according to Adam Shaheen, prexy of Cuppa Coffee.

We Go To The Brave Bull, So you Don’t Have To.

The Brave Bull at Clarke and Hastings definitely falls into the category of things that have always existed, and if you wanted to make a venn diagram you could add places no ones ever been in the intersecting circle. It’s been there since I was a kid, back then it exuded a seedy glamour, a vibe well hidden under the Hastings grime now. We decided to take a chance on Friday night on our way to a Giants game. (Aside; New record for some jerk spilling his beer on me, three minutes after entering and I already smell like a spent mash tun in a crappy industrial brewery. And another aside before returning to our prime focus, why is the beer selection at The Coliseum the worst on the planet? Rickards Red as my “premium” draft choice. Embarrassing.)
