A Visit to Mis Trucos

by paulkamon 08.19.2009

Mis Trucos (Spanish for “my tricks”) is a new modern Mediterranean inspired tapas bar that has just recently opened its doors for your dining pleasure. Be careful or you just might miss this charming little restaurant set within a 1920’s character house perched above a storefront on bustling Davie Street as I did; I literally [...]

The Refined Refinery is Open

by BC Brew 08.18.2009

After quietly refining their food, drink, and service during the course of the chaotic Granville Street revitalization outside, The Refinery threw a party to announce they are open for business. Media, industry, and the public were invited to celebrate. On hand to showcase the products used by The Refinery were Mia Hunt of Victoria Spirits, [...]

Blind Tasting Review: 2006 Mission Hill SLC Syrah

by paulkamon 08.18.2009

I have been playing a wine game with restaurant sommeliers and wine nerds across town where I show up with a mystery bottle and ask them to review it blind.  By not knowing what the wine is or who represents it, hopefully, an honest-no-bs-review is achieved. ~ PK
Come inside and read the review of our [...]

Pit Roast Pork

by Keith Talent 08.17.2009

I have a friend, he and I like to undertake one project a summer, a beery time consuming project of 18th century labour levels for gain not commensurate with the effort. We’ve made salt, had clam bakes at the beach, fried chicken on a campfire and this year decided to pit roast some pork. [...]

Chefs To The Field at Terra Nova

by paulkamon 08.17.2009

If all the food and wine from The Dirty Apron Cooking School open house and VinoCamp CheeseCamp 09 wasn’t enough this weekend, I needed to eat more. Jeesh. However, on Sunday morning I headed to the Chefs To The Field event at Terra Nova Schoolyard Society in Richmond.

Dirty Apron Cooking School Open House

by paulkamon 08.17.2009

I certainly don’t claim to be any expert on cooking schools, nor interior decorating for that matter, but The Dirty Apron Cooking School is gorgeous. Located at 540 Beatty Street, just a few doors down from Chambar and Medina, the School had their open house this past weekend and it definitely was a popular place [...]

El Bulli Review

by Keith Talent 08.16.2009

Some light Sunday reading for you; An amazing review of dinner at El Bulli, in a style as surreal as the food itself. The amazing thing is even with the pictures and video, you still have difficulty relating to the dishes. This is as good an overview of a meal there as I’ve seen, but [...]

Just one day shy of their 38th anniversary, the long-standing Cannery Restaurant has officially announced that they will be closing their doors at the end of March after the 2010 Olympics.
From the press release:

40+8 Hours of Food & Flicks

by BC Brew 08.14.2009

There was no sign on the front of 1898 Main Street to announce grace-gallery, the venue for a 48-hour marathon of cooking, looping local indie film shorts, and a food-related art exhibit. The windows of the non-descript, stuccoed lowrise were also covered. However, as I came closer, I noticed the posters in the window, suggesting [...]

Ike Jime Smackdown

by Keith Talent 08.13.2009

A stunningly good blog post on sundry and assorted fish dispatch methods and their resultant effect on the flavour and texture,  (two part post, part two can be found here), with highlights of the Japanese needle through the spine technique called  ike jime.  Well worth a read. Be warned, however, graphic fish slaughter pictures ahead. [...]

Nota Bene Vertical Tasting

by paulkamon 08.13.2009

Recently, I attended a rare vertical tasting of the famed and highly-coveted Black Hills Nota Bene at Au Petit Chavignol. This single vineyard Bordeaux-style blend (cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc), since its first vintage in 1999, has gained an enviable loyal following that has made it one of the hardest big BC reds to find [...]
