Pork Brains in Milk Gravy

by Keith Talent 02.27.2009

Occasionally something simple will shake your whole world view. I’ve always claimed to be a “I’ll eat anything once” kind of guy. Tinned pork brain in milk gravy makes me rethink my whole self image, apparently there are things I will go to my grave having never tried. Who eats this? The only conceivable reason [...]

Three Days in Napa

by Keith Talent 02.26.2009

My wife and I took advantage of the insane airfares between Bellingham and Oakland on Allegiant to spend some time in Napa over the weekend. I love Allegiant for their rickety aircraft, surly cabin crew and tweens piloting. The spectre of danger only enhances the appreciation for life you have on the other end, meaning [...]

Nuba Opens in the Dominion Building

by paulkamon 02.26.2009

Here is a look at the gorgeous new Nuba restaurant, which has grown out of its cozy little cafe across the street into a larger (60+ seats), more well-rounded concept that has taken over the cavernous old Mouse and Bean location in the basement of the Dominion building on West Hastings and Cambie Street.

Bière avec Fromage

by BC Brew 02.24.2009

Beer and cheese pairing is growing in popularity amongst the craft beer crowd and is starting to trickle into the local culinary scene. In Victoria,  Spinnakers has their B.C. Artisan Cheese Taster appetizer course and Ottavio hosted a tasting with Phillips Brewing. Chef Lee Humphries of Vancouver’s FigMint Restaurant has hosted a number of pairings [...]

One Day In Berkeley

by Keith Talent 02.24.2009

Spent the day in Berkeley yesterday. Weirdest place on earth. Take the residents of The British Properties, drop them at 41st and Victoria, throw in a dash of Scott Road and bus in half of the Downtown Eastside and you would start to experience the disconnect that is Berkeley. The slow simmering prospect of class [...]

President Obama Samples the Goods

by paulkamon 02.21.2009

Newly-elected US president and currently the most famous man alive, Mr. Barack Obama, has come and gone after a brief 7 hour visit to the Great White North, but not before we gave him a taste of the goods, as half of his time was spent enjoying a decadent lunch at the Senate Speaker’s quarters [...]

Say What?! Dirty Hippies Want to Take Away Your Coffee?

by paulkamon 02.20.2009

How is it that a magazine “about sustainable city living” is run by an editor who thinks local food security is a back to earth, neo-hippie and anti-globalization movement conspiracy? David Jordan, the magazine editor of Granville, seems to think so.  In the latest issue of the magazine, his letter from the editor entitled, “Food [...]

BC Brew Review: Blackstone Porter

by BC Brew 02.20.2009

Porter is said to have been an improved brown ale created by London brewers in 1720 to compete with paler ales that were of increasing popularity amongst the gentry. It was a comparatively well-hopped ale conditioned for some time in wooden butts (casks) to make it more mellow. The new ale became popular with the [...]
