I’ve been busy organising the new Vancouver Cooks cookbook with my colleagues at the Chef’s Table Society over the last few weeks, so as you’ve seen I haven’t been able to post much. For those of you who might be interested, the book is coming along very well and very quickly. Phase One – the gathering and reviewing of over 120 recipes – is nearly complete. All of the contributing chefs have been helpful and patient, and it’s been thrilling to read over and review so many thoughtful and well constructed recipes. For certain, not many cities around the world would see this amount of cooperation between competitors for the common good of their industry. I hope when it all comes together and arrives on the shelves next year that its “collective” sensibilities will shine through loud and clear. We have pulled together some great talent for this book. Through it we hope to show how deep and wide the pool goes.

But enough shilling…there’s much more after the leap.

Here are some headlines that I’ve been meaning to put up while my attentions have been elsewhere:

La Brasserie opened tonight. I walked in between meetings today an hour or so before launch and man oh man did Perrow et al ever look harried! We wish them the best of luck.

MRKT has seen the writing on the wall with the coming of Market and changed their name to The Refinery. Opening day should soon be in a few weeks.

I went on a tour of Campagnolo the other day. It’s still very much a naked shell, but I’ve eyeballed the schematics and the design and they’re real purdy (just a teaser above).

The new Pinkys is now open on West 4th, complete with the worst name of all the CFD chains, according to our reader poll (and by a significant margin).

Piato still has the paper up, but I imagine they’re close to opening.

Alexandra Gill loves the new Irish Heather and likes RedXRed. Two positive reviews in a row? WTF? I’d cancel my subscription if I was a dinosaur had one.

Ryan Emmerson, the GM of the new Earls slated for Yaletown, has told me straight up that rumours of a rooftop patio and bar are an “urban myth”.

My review of Medina is up in this week’s WE (our photographer Doug Shanks took a swell pic of Robbie Kane).

Western Living has their Top 40 Foodies Under 40 feature in their new issue. I had a hand in plenty of the choices/editorial, so please feel free to let us know how and where I fucked up.

That’s all I can think of off the top of my head right now. Michelle and I are off for a few days to check out the Okanagan Fall Wine Festival. Grandma has the kids. I’ll be checking in on the forum often, but not too often. Hopefully I’ll have some exciting news to announce soon after I get back. In the meantime, don’t sweat the first week of October blues. Your numbers probably sucked at this time last year, too.

Have fun at the wine fest. Looking forward to any highlights; we’ll be there Oct 10-13 to take in as much as we can.

I (amongst many others at CTS) want to deeply thank Andrew for undertaking the formidable task of harvesting recipes and biographs, as well as remaining polite through the process. We have struck a fair deal with our publisher [D&M}, and look forward to a venture that profits emerging chefs, school food programs, and many other worthies.

Please look forward to Vancouver Cooks 2.0 with vigour.

Jamie
