On The Road Again

fof-2007-195.jpg

Michelle and I are leaving the kids with their grandparents and heading up to Whistler for Feast of Fields this morning. I’ll report on our trip when we get back. Have a great weekend everybody!

UPDATE: Arrived and all is well. Feast of Fields was quite different from previous years with the food, wine, and beer tents all tightly contained in Rebagliadi Park rather than spread out at Pemberton’s expansive (and gorgeous) North Arm Farm. There was a healthy turnout (pictures coming soon in video format) with plenty of familiar faces, great food, and a perennially full chef’s cup of Sun God. A black bear tried to break up the festivities, but we chased it away with pots and pans, directly into the path of a bunch of children. Good times.

We’re staying at the lovely Chateau Whistler Fairmont. Dinner at Araxi in a few hours. Hot tub beckons.

Is It A Done Deal At The Shangri-La?

slv_overview1.jpg

UD broke the news on the ides of this past April that internationally acclaimed chef and restaurateur Jean-George Vongerichten was in talks to open a restaurant in the upcoming Shangri-La hotel, currently under construction on Alberni St. downtown (Vancouver’s tallest building). Word is the hotel will also host the second location of David Aisenstat’s Ki, a Japa-themed restaurant that is – based on my experiences of the original in Toronto – more Walt Disney than Hidekazu Tojo.

While there has yet to be any confirmation on the Jean-Georges front, I’m hearing it’s a done deal: we can expect the restaurant to open when the hotel does in the new year (perhaps earlier). My sources could be wrong, but I doubt it. If it is all bullshit, I’ll use the blogger defense: “Hey, it’s just a blog. What do I know?” I think it’s legit, and I’ll leave it to the papers to read this post and get confirmations this week.

Needless to say, I’m very excited at the prospect of having another high calibre restaurant in the downtown core, an area in danger of being over run by middling tourist traps and glorified fast food chains.

Help Lauren Get A Job

As many of you many of you are aware, Zoom Airlines went under this morning, throwing hundreds out of work. Among them was an old friend of mine, Lauren, a colleague from my Beach House days. She was my favourite busser, but she proved herself and quickly moved up to serving. I hated it when she was promoted, because I could no longer depend on her to do my job for me. She’s looking to resume her serving career. If any of our GM or restaurateur readers are interested in picking up a hard worker on the fly (no pun intended), check in to the forum’s Trade Winds thread, where I believe she will shortly be posting her details for your consideration.

Soundtrack No.85

Morrissey still has it.
