Filtration Plant An Invitation To Change?

by admin 06.25.2008

So there’s a massive new water filtration plant that’ll soon be coming online to gush its liquid perfection through a tap near you.
With a daily capacity of 1.8 billion litres, the new Seymour-Capilano water filtration plant seems destined to be something of a landmark facility when it finally comes on-stream towards the end of 2008.

Mental Health Break

Video games just weren’t anywhere near this cool when I was a kid. Can’t a guy get any work done without being beset by adolescent distractions? Take a look at more “Bad Company” trailers here.

Are Our No Fun City Days Numbered?

by admin 06.25.2008

The Province follows recent meetings between restaurateurs and senior city staff on the retarded state of Vancouver’s early closing hours. The money quote comes from Greg McMullen, lord broham of a Facebook group called “Stop Vancouver’s Bedtime Police!”:
“A lot of us don’t want to go down to Granville and we want to stay in our [...]

Mole Hill To Mountain

by admin 06.24.2008

Today’s Globe makes another hillock from a dung heap with a story entitled “Group pans restaurateur for foie gras statement”. The only redeeming thing about it is that it’s brief.
Here’s the salient graph:
Mr. Ferreira [Manny from Le Gavroche and Senova] was quoted in a business paper as stating that he did not believe that the [...]

UD Industry Golf Registry In The Forum

by admin 06.23.2008

So the other day I played a round of golf with Owen Lightly of Butter On The Endive and Jeff Van Geest, chef/owner at Aurora Bistro. We sort of stumbled into setting up the game, but as you can see from the short clip above (courtesy of Lightly) it was very much a jolly time. [...]

Sahara Tamarin Joins Uva And Cibo

by admin 06.23.2008

A stellar GM pick up for Uva Wine Bar and Cibo Trattoria in the Moda Hotel: Sahara Tamarin was part of the opening team at Aurora Bistro and spent 3 years at Parkside before joining the crew at Lumiere. Most recently, she was the manager at Chow.
From her bio:
Having travelled and eaten all over the [...]

Moderne Burger Coming This Friday!

by admin 06.23.2008

Some fresh pics and good news from the Moderne Burger front. Vancouver’s best burgers are just five days away. Huzzah!
From founder/owner Peter Kokinis:
“bearing an act of god or war [...] we will be open [this] Friday.”
Why the long delay?
We’ve had equipment delays and problems which one would expect when building something like this from scratch, [...]

Van Mag To Review The Art Gallery Café

by admin 06.21.2008

It’s not out yet but a reliable tipster reveals that the upcoming July issue of Van Mag will sport a glowing review of the Gallery Café, the same restaurant that cost my palate dearly last week (read excerpts of my review here). I don’t know who wrote it, but this is about as fine an [...]

by admin 06.20.2008

Click video above to play
The new restaurant from the Glowbal Group, dubbed Trattoria Italian Kitchen (video above), opened tonight at 1850 West 4th. Nice looking place. I was impressed by the food that was being passed around, and the cold beers were most welcome. We wish them good luck and good fortune.

Not Exactly Loving The Gallery Cafe

by admin 06.20.2008

My review in the Westender this week sees The Gallery Cafe as all that and a bag of mediocrity:
…The biggest disappointment dove-tails squarely with the obvious lack of effort. I’m not sure if it’s a management or an ownership problem, but it needs to get sorted out. Right now, with what they’re currently bringing to [...]
