Van Mag To Review The Art Gallery Café

by admin on June 21, 2008

It’s not out yet but a reliable tipster reveals that the upcoming July issue of Van Mag will sport a glowing review of the Gallery Café, the same restaurant that cost my palate dearly last week (read excerpts of my review here). I don’t know who wrote it, but this is about as fine an illustration of how subjective the food writing gig can be as I can imagine.

Truly, one person’s coal can be another person’s diamond. Who’s right? It’s impossible to say.

The food reminds me of Bread Garden but with ambience.

Does Vanmag ever write reviews with a negative view of an establishment, or are they only reporting on the good ones. Just wondering…

only if it’s unjust ….oh wait Jamie is not there any more!!

Yes, VanMag has written negative reviews before. Look up the one for what is now the Players Chop House (sorry, forgot the name). And yes, it was Jamie who wrote it.

Who cares about Vancouver magazine anymore? It’s been crap ever since Jamie left.

Yeah, “Team Toronto”, as they’re called, don’t have a clue when it comes to restaurants. David Sidoo has the new editor in the bag.

Is that you, David?

Van mag lost its luster a long time ago. The only issue I buy any more is their restaurant guide. It’s handy for numbers and addresses. Otherwise I agree. It’s crap.

I think Andrew and Alexandra still write for them so it can’t be that bad.

Lighten up people! Spain beat Italy today which means that Robson tonight will be livable instead of a noisy mess of flag-waving pseudo-Italians driving back and forth till 3am honking their horns and otherwise making asses of themselves.

George makes a good point… if only they were wearing orange….

I’m curious as to the timing of Andrew’s article, and the one in Van Mag coming out so close together.

Has something happened at the Gallery Cafe recently to warrant this attention? Seriously, up until now I knew of its existence, and that it was pretty much a cafeteria/Bread garden stype of place. But now TWO reviews?

What gives?

Andrew Morrison June 22, 2008 at 9:59 pm

I can assure you that it was pure coincidence. I was very surprised myself, as I really thought I was going out on a limb when I could have reviewed a more established or recently opened full service restaurant.

No one should expect good food in a museum or gallery restaurant. The museum/gallery is just trying to make more money off the visitors.Tate museums in London, Orsay and Pompidou in Paris; they are all mediocre.

WOW….gol-le George!! you sure know a lot about museum’s!!!
