Wither Goest Rare?

by admin 04.17.2008

So after losing their liquor license due to what sounds like gross negligence (apparently they just let it expire); the dissolution of the business partnership (Tim Keller left last month); a sudden shutdown for “exciting renovations”; and the unceremonious exit of the staff (principally, chef Colleen McClean), I’m getting a lot of people asking me [...]

Pinkys Stalled On 4th?

by admin 04.16.2008

The city issued a “stop work” order on them back in February, but how far along has Pinkys on West 4th come since? The pic above shows what the exterior has looked like for several months now. OPENING VERY SOON. Very promising.
They had the door open when I walked past today so I snapped a [...]

Ping’s Cafe Looking Good On Main St.

by admin 04.15.2008

I took a peek in at Ping’s Cafe tonight and was wowed by what I saw. The new restaurant at Main and 11th (2702 Main) just opened this past Friday. It’s all about Japanese comfort food, and the room is a tiny stunner. There was no pre-opening buzz about it at all. In fact, none [...]

Jean-Georges To Open In Vancouver?

by admin 04.15.2008

It’s not official, but I’m getting this from a source I trust. Word is New York’s famed Jean-Georges Vongerichten has been tapped to open restaurants in the Shangri-La hotels currently under construction in Vancouver and Toronto. There are over 15 restaurants in Vongerichten’s international empire, among them JoJo, Mercer Kitchen, the eponymous Jean-Georges, Paris’ Dune, [...]

DB Bistro & Lumiere Designs Leaked

by admin 04.12.2008

The design schematics for DB Bistro Moderne and Lumiere have landed our way, several months before the side-by-side restaurants are set to launch. Word is I’m not in the Sidoos’ good books so I’m pretty certain it didn’t come from them. A frigate bird, perhaps.
Unauthorised leak or not, Lumiere as we knew it is gone, [...]

NYT On Wine Bars

by admin 04.10.2008

Big feature on wine bars in this morning’s New York Times (hat tip to reader SH). It’s a read that makes one salivate:
At last count, nywinebarguide.com, a Web site devoted to tracking the city’s wine bars, had found 131 in the city, although Ray Kasbarian, its chief executive, conceded that the number was out of [...]
