It’s not official, but I’m getting this from a source I trust. Word is New York’s famed Jean-Georges Vongerichten has been tapped to open restaurants in the Shangri-La hotels currently under construction in Vancouver and Toronto. There are over 15 restaurants in Vongerichten’s international empire, among them JoJo, Mercer Kitchen, the eponymous Jean-Georges, Paris’ Dune, London’s Rama, and Bora Bora’s stunning Lagoon.
I’d heard last June that David Aisenstat’s Ki was going into the building next to our Shangri-La, and that an unknown restaurant would be installed on the second floor as the hotel’s signature eatery. Let’s hope this is it.
UPDATE: latest word is that they’re in discussions still and that the deal has not yet been signed.

Check the date, not April 1, good.
If this pans out, it would be fantastic for Vancouver restaurant goers.
One has to assume that both Daniel and Jean-Georges will have to import at least some of their staff, the native talent pool being too small. If we’re lucky, some of these people will stay in Vancouver to open their own places.
Now this is something to be excited about if true.
This would be a treat and give us some more international city status.
