The April issue of Van Mag came online this afternoon. In the food side of the book there’s an interesting, anecdotal, and very informative piece by Dee Hon on the varied manifestations of Indian cuisine available to Vancouverites. In addition, wine writer Christina Burridge tells an abbreviated tale of Canada’s newest Master of Wine, Barbara Philip.
And as the top of the cover alludes, they’ve also named their 10 Best New Restaurants.
Unfortunately, they aren’t listed in any order and there’s no criteria-explaining paragraph in the online version, just 10 micro reviews under the headline “recently reviewed”. I wonder if there’s something more lurking in the print version?
Their picks are as follows:
Lin Chinese Cuisine and Tea House, Sip Resto Lounge, Deuce, Cobre, Splitz Grill, Café Medina, Carmichael’s, Boneta, Flite, and Me & Julio.

Those are their 10 best new restaurants? Holy crap! What the hell kind of rock has this magazine been living under?
Was this Jamie Maw?
No. Jamie left Van Mag several issues ago. Tara Lee, Chris Gonzales, and Lucas Lee shared bylines for the 10 mini reviews. I think the cover banner was just a bit of salesmanship (either that or it was a typo).
How is it fair that Chris Gonzales can write about restaurants and be a judge in the Van Mag “awards” while working as a manager for the Top Table group at the same time?
As long as he doesn’t review Top Table restaurants, and abstains from voting on them, does it really matter?
IIRC, the illustrious Andrew Morrison did the same thing when he worked at the Beach House.
For the year that I played for both sides I made a point of never writing about the North Shore and told the Van Mag powers that I couldn’t vote in the Best North Shore category. Now I just vote for whoever pays the highest (kidding).
For the record, Chris is totally on the level.
Thank you Andrew.
You’re welcome (unless you thought I wasn’t kidding, in which case…I was totally kidding).
I’m looking forward to the 14th.
More adventures in logrolling.
