UD Awards To Be Held At Nu Restaurant

ud-awards-carpet.jpg

Andrew and I are excited to announce that NU restaurant has generously offered to host the 1st Annual Urban Diner Awards on February 18th. While we are still working out the finer details (there is a lot more news to come!), here is what we can tell you so far:

- A number of tables at the front of the presentation stage will be reserved for a pre-awards dinner (guests then stay front and center for the duration). These are the sweet seats, and chef Rob Clark and his team are drawing up a menu as we speak.

- The guest list will see all 1st place winners coming in twos only (40 categories = 80 winners).

- The local food media will be invited, as well as a significant number of randomly selected UD members. To put your name down, contact Andrew via email or PM him in the forum. We’d like everyone who would like to come to be able to, but there likely won’t be enough space.

- We regret there will be no room for 2nd and 3rd place finishers. Sniff.

- All told, including those seated for the pre-awards dinner, we are looking at a crowd of about 200 people.

- Though there will definitely be a cash bar, we have secured enough sponsorship as it is now to ensure some complimentary drinks during the presentations (beer, wine, and special cocktails).

- As we would like to make this a revenue neutral event for Urban Diner, we would love any further help our readers could give. If you would like to have your business somehow participate in the festivities, we’d be thrilled to have you with us on the big day.

Please contact me if you have any questions, ideas, or kindnesses.

Alexandra Gill’s Winter Blues

Alex in this morning’s Globe. First words:

Are you suffering from the January cash-flow blues?

Last words:

Then again, it’s January. Maybe I’m just feeling fat and depressed.

Also, Vikram Vij on how “using better quality ingredients is a recipe for success.” Good guy to ask.

Where Should I Be Dining Out In Toronto?

I’m in Toronto in a week for a few days helping to judge the CCC. I was there recently but didn’t do too much in the way of getting out and about (video). I’ll probably be writing a feature about my trip, and would really like to take the restaurant pulse while I’m there. I’m staying at the Soho downtown, and word is my cab fare is taken care of (I regret Eigensinn Farm will be too far). What restaurants should I visit that are somehow emblematic of where Toronto is as a food city these days?
