Awesome Tintin Belgian Waffle House of Babar (aka Medina)

Chambar owners Karri (interview) and Nico Schuermans, together with veteran Chambar server Robert Kane, have just taken possession of the space immediately next door to their popular Beatty Street location.

Word is we can expect a similar aesthetic and vibe backdropping the same service standard and quality of product. The trick is that they’ll be open exclusively in the day – shutting down pretty much when Chambar opens in the late afternoon.

The trio and GM Paul Grunberg are traveling to New York and parts elsewhere in short order to work out and fine tune the concept details. Construction should begin shortly thereafter – probably before May is out. Opening Day is slated for August.

The name is currently being withheld, so here at Urban Diner we’re dubbing it the Awesome Tintin Belgian Waffle House of Babar until we learn otherwise. Not a bad substitute, really, considering I’ve had a few.

UPDATE: They’re calling it Medina.

UPDATE: It’s open. Photos here. My WE column on it here.

How about “Asterix”? If the food kicks as much ass as this little guy does, then they will be laughing all the way to la banque! ;-P

I remember a great little restaurant in Old Montreal that was full of Tintin motives. Could be a nice touch for the new digs.

anyone interested in a lifesize TINTIN bust, previously of Paris address, and comes with a summer straw hat and a winter fur cap…
price negotiable, but includes enormous sentimental value…
[maybe the new restaurant will be interested??...I am open to exchanging TINTIN for Nico as my personal chef anytime!]

Hi zy-xin,

Do you have any photographs of the bust?

Medina – A quaint new cafe next to Chambar, serving coffee for connoisseurs and liege waffles for sweet sustenance.

Medina will open this Monday ever so quietly, while we work out what else to serve in a coffee shop with Liege waffles. Any suggestions or recommendations would be grateful. We will be open fro breakfast & lunch in June at the latest as we wait for tenants behind us to move out.
The space will be used in the evening as a private function room for Chambar, and in the summer will host kids once a week, so parents can enjoy a meal next door at Chambar.

Just went to the ’soft’ opening. Unbelievable coffee & waffles! Super decor & ambience. It’s a winner!
Congratulations to the trio.

When I asked for fresh waffles, the waiter told me to come back at 9am next time. The one that I had was at least 2 hours old and yes, it was soggy and cold. What a service-oriented response that was! It only takes 2-3 minutes making fresh waffles and I could not believe how audacious the waiter was. I guess I had high expectations going to cafe Medina, as I love going to Chambar. It was total disappointment and it ruined my Saturday brunch. Besides having paid about 3 bucks for chewy and old piece of waffles, we also had to wait so long to be attended. NEVER AGAIN.
