Vive La Difference!

I hit 2 new French bistro’s last week, Jules and Bistrot Bistro. Both were excellent food, and although the service was efficient, what’s with kurt and arrogant attitude? I just thought is was too funny a coincidence that at both French bistro’s we had French female servers, and both times it was the same deal. I am aware that women can be catty, but I can assure you that this was soooo not the case with our group on both occasions. It actually really took us off guard.

I’ve dined at both restaurants and never had this problem. The servers were very sincere in their delivery, and were nowhere near anything approximating rude. If rudeness is an ethno-specific trait, it certainly isn’t in the restaurant business, where petty dickery can often rule the roost (rudeness is also not a fault exclusive to women – far from it). While there is a certain stigma in the Anglo-American tradition of French people being rude by virtue of snootiness being their national pastime, it remains a prejudice born of comical xenophobia. It certainly isn’t something reflected by any fact on the ground. Some folks are just hard wired to be haughty and, let’s face it, not everyone can wait tables with a permagrin.
