Following a MOMA afterparty, George and I decided to hit up Morimoto, the restaurant of Iron Chef fame that has received much critical acclaim. Arriving too late to enjoy the full menu, we headed to the bar downstairs to try some appetizers…

I didn’t take photos of the cocktails but should of, since these were the best part of our meal. Having heard through a friend that the Rock Shrimp was the item to order, I was disappointed with the doughy texture of the tempura and the yogurt dill sauce that came on the side.

We didn’t fare much better with the $23 Kobe beef carpaccio, which was “cooked” in my opinion, and tasted like stir-fried beef. It was also much too thick. But what do I know about cooking like an Iron Chef?

By far my favorite part of the evening was the trip to the bathroom, where reflective mirrors showed a cascade of cherry blossoms and the toilets came with washing instructions for that extra fresh feeling. It’s too bad, but I have to admit that my trip to Morimoto was incredibly average. Perhaps we would have fared better in the dining room had we arrived a little earlier.
